Note: On Oct. 4, 2004, In response to the Vioxx recall, I sent the following letter to all of the Board of Directors for Merck Pharmaceutical. Only one replied (2-1-05, four months later) stating that they were not interested because "Merc is focused on the discovery and development of new chemical or biological entities." (See my answer to the one reply below this letter.)

Dear Mr. ________________,


    May I extend my commendation to Merck for the Vioxx recall. You have truly lived up to your corporate statement of "putting patients before profits."
    I respectfully submit for your consideration another way of looking at inflammation and another way of treating inflammation than with anti-inflammatory drugs. My thesis and response to the Vioxx recall follows:

    The Merck Pharmaceutical Vioxx recall illustrates how wrong it is to treat pain and/or inflammation by suppressing the pain signal or by suppressing the inflammation which also suppresses other vital body functions (possibly the reason why Vioxx increased the risk of heart attacks and stroke). Inflammation is a natural healing process. Suppressing inflammation reduces the ability of the body to heal. If we understand physiology, anti-inflammatory medications make as much sense as anti-perspirants. Would you take something that kept you from breathing because you have bad breath? The answer is obvious. Anti-inflammatory medications are also by their nature anti healing. Suppressing healthy body functions does not promote good health.

      The challenge is to correct what causes the pain while allowing the inflammation to do the healing. It is possible to have inflammation and not have pain. Why does inflammation, which is a normal healthy healing process, not always cause pain? Pain associated with inflammation occurs because bioelectric connections between cells are broken the same as when we are injured. When there is no pain, it is because the body has reconnected the broken circuits. That is the way the body heals pain and the only way we can heal pain; by helping the body to reconnect the broken circuits that cause pain. Everything else just suppresses the pain signal and does nothing to correct the underlying cause of pain.
    I have developed a product called Biotape® which connects the broken circuits that cause pain, but does not suppress other vital functions, cause gastrointestinal bleeding, or cause kidney or liver damage.    May I demonstrate for you at your convenience in the Merck headquarters a better way to treat even severe chronic pain. Note: Below is my response to the one reply I received:

You response does not surprise me. (Buggy makers were not interested in the automobile and
typewriter companies were complacent about computers until they found themselves completely
out of business.)

The endogenous electrical signals in the body are a "biological entity." This is what my letter
was talking about. After measuring the electrical resistance at the site of pain in more than 18,000
patients, I can prove to you or anyone else that pain occurs when those biological signals are
broken. Reconnecting them is the way the body heals pain and the only way pain can be healed
without side effects.

Vioxx may have killed 25-50 times as many people as the number of soldiers killed in Iraq,
and you are not interested in a biological entity more effective than Vioxx and without side
effects? I ask only for an opportunity to demonstrate my claims in Merc headquarters or anywhere
else at my expense.

Yesterday (2-2-05), I received the following letter from a Vioxx user who has had heart attacks
(her attorney will see the Merc attorneys in court):

Dear Darrell Stoddard;

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for over 15 years and have tried just about everything for the pain
in my knees and hands. After almost giving up, I found your Biotape, and the results have been far
more than I had ever possibly comprehended. I thought at one time that I would have surgery on
my knees, because I couldn't stand up without help. I have had a very hard time walking for years.
Within a short time of using the Biotape, I felt the pain going. I am now able to walk two miles a
day and stand up and sit down with ease. I find it really helps almost any pain.

Thank you so much for the Biotape, I will always be grateful to you.

Note: The following was not sent but is included here for those interested in the Vioxx recall.
The FDA originally estimatedVioxx Caused 27,785 heart attacks. David J. Graham of the
FDA Office of Drug Safety estimated that as many as 139,000 Americans who took Vioxx may
have suffered serious side effects. "Of these, 30% to 40% probably died," Graham told a
Senate panel. "For the survivors, their lives were changed forever." Graham's estimates,
disputed by his FDA superior at the hearing, suggested that 26,000 to 55,600 patients might
have died as a result of taking Vioxx. This is 25 to 50 times as many deaths as the number of
U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.
